To ensure the sustainability of the Selva Maya, land use planning at the national, regional and local levels needs to take environmental protection into account. It is therefore necessary to include key stakeholders in the participatory planning process for land use in and around the Selva Maya.

For most people, economic stability guarantees survival and access to a good quality of life. Strategically, one of the conservation mechanisms of the Selva Maya is to generate economic alternatives favorable to biodiversity such as agroecological practices and the sustainable use of timber and non-timber forest products.

The conservation of nature and sustainable use of natural resources in the Selva Maya is impossible without joint efforts. The implementation of local and regional coordination mechanisms between government actors and civil society as well as across borders is essential.
