2nd Ecotourism and Biodiversity Symposium, Calakmul 2017

On October 20 and 21, 2017, the Second Ecotourism Fest ‘Calakmul 2017’ was held. It is an event led by the City Council of Calakmul, institutions of the three levels of government and various civil society organizations to promote sustainable tourism with the participation of local service providers.

Within the framework of this ‘Calakmul 2017’ fest, the second Ecotourism and Biodiversity Symposium, organized by the Technological University of Calakmul, the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, the Directorate of Tourism and Environment of Calakmul and the GIZ Selva Maya Programme, was held on October 20th.

The event started with a lcture entitled “Calakmul and the Biosphere Reserve”, by Dr. William Folan Higgins, an archaeologist with vast experience of the Mayan culture. Mr. Daniel Garza Tobón also participated with the lecture “Photographic tourism, a new source of income and photography as a conservation tool”, as well as Mr. Dino Alberto Aveleyra Talamantes with the presentation “Sustainable management of tourist destinations”.

Mr. Dino Alberto Aveleyra an anthropologist of travel, expert in management of heritage tourism destinations and specialized guide in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico aditionally gave two workshops aimed at local touristic service providers, artisans and tourist guides which from pat of the Municipal Tourism Committee which actively promotes the organization and planning of the region´s tourism development in coordination with government and civil society actors.
